Helping Earth life ascend into the stars
The destiny of life is to expand. On Earth, it fills every space it can. Someday soon, it will reach even farther.
Beyond will plan and study this expansion. We’ll build a body of research and theory about the prospects of life from Earth on other cosmic bodies.
As technology develops, Beyond will help accelerate the migration of life to new worlds, supporting our first off-Earth ecosystems.
Project brief
Beyond is a long-horizon research project about life from Earth beyond our home planet. The responsible starting point is not a promise to create off-world ecosystems soon. It is careful study of closed-loop life support, astrobiology, planetary protection, space sustainability, governance, and the ethical limits of biological activity beyond Earth—while keeping the protection of life on Earth central.
Working principles
- Prevent biological contamination and respect planetary-protection science.
- Support peaceful, sustainable, broadly beneficial uses of space and transparent international governance.
- Separate near-term science from distant speculation, and label uncertainty plainly.
Organizations and resources to learn from
These independent links are starting points for research. They are not endorsements, funding recommendations, or claims of partnership.
- The Planetary Society — public-interest space science, exploration, and planetary defense
- Space for Humanity — efforts to broaden participation and connect space experience to benefit on Earth
- Secure World Foundation — policy work for secure, sustainable, and peaceful uses of outer space
Near-term milestones
- Publish a research map separating established science, active engineering, governance questions, and speculation.
- Convene a small review group spanning astrobiology, life-support engineering, ethics, law, and space sustainability.
- Release one sourced primer on planetary protection and responsible biological research beyond Earth.
Current status
Research and relationship-building. Lifeco is not yet operating a field program under this project.
How to help
We welcome astrobiologists, closed-loop systems researchers, space-law and ethics scholars, planetary-protection specialists, science communicators, and long-term governance researchers. If that is you, contact Lifeco and mention this project.
